LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Reliable power will attract tomorrow’s employers
Mark Eagan, Albany
The recent articles on Gov. Kathy Hochul's nuclear energy initiative, including "Hochul wants to build more nuclear power than the U.S. has in 30 years" (Aug. 16), highlight why expanding nuclear energy is a smart investment for New Yorkers and the state’s economic future.
Hochul has set an ambitious goal of adding enough new nuclear power to supply electricity to nearly 4 million homes. She has also directed the New York Power Authority to begin developing a major portion of that new capacity. This level of commitment is exactly what is needed to build the infrastructure required to support a growing economy.
As the state competes for major employers, including semiconductor manufacturers, access to reliable and abundant, round-the-clock electricity is increasingly important. A stronger and more reliable statewide grid benefits thousands of businesses and communities that depend on economic growth. Nuclear power provides carbon-free electricity regardless of weather conditions. Hochul's plan to build more new capacity than the country has added in three decades is exactly the kind of ambition needed to support New York's economic future.
The Capital Region Chamber supports this buildout, and we urge state leaders to continue moving it forward.
